Learn how to remodel your whole house with ease and joy. Setting a solid foundation is key!
So you’ve finished your grand plans for a full house remodel, and you’re chomping at the bit to get started. Your mind goes straight to paint, design and fancy new features.
Not so fast — you’ve got to check the foundation and make sure its updated and ready to handle the road ahead.
In this three-part series, we uncover the tips and tricks to help you remodel your entire home, from planning to preparation to the mistakes you’ll want to avoid.
- Consider Gas And Water.
If you’re planning to add bathrooms or other water-heavy features, make sure you consider your water supply lines and the capacity of your water heater. You may want to add a second unit if necessary. And the same goes for your gas. Will your current meter be large enough to handle the additional needs of, say, a built-in outdoor kitchen? If your second phase includes a new fireplace or heated guesthouse, then prepare for that now. - Deaden The Sound.
While you may not be able to show off the fancy insulation in your walls, your guests will appreciate the sound barrier when they use your restroom or spend the night down the hall from a snoring family member. Consider extra insulation around your laundry room and media room, as well as shared bedroom walls. Bonus: Upgrade to cast iron waste pipes to drown out the noise of water running through the walls. - Upgrade Your Electrical Panel.
If your electrical panel offers a basic or minimal amount of amperes, it may be time to upgrade. Additionally, if your current electrical panel has more power, but every slot is filled, it may be time to upgrade, as well. You may also want to seize this opportunity to update antiquated wiring.
