Here to Help
Thankfully, Santa Clarita Valley has not experienced fires as devastating as the Camp Fire of 2017, which killed 85 people and scorched 18,800 structures. However, that doesn’t mean residents are completely unfamiliar with loss. Destruction caused by fire, smoke and water during the recent Tick Fire has left more than 26 structures destroyed.
Families are left with the question of whether they should repair the damage – sometimes having to rebuild completely – or find a new home. Randal Winter Construction has helped several families consider their options. With each of our clients, we strive to provide the support and information they need to make important decisions. Here are some thoughts to help you or your loved ones do the same.
Contact Your Insurance Company
Contacting your insurance company should be close to the top of your list of priorities. An insurance agent will be able to tell you what steps need to be taken immediately. You will also be able to find out what expenses will be covered by insurance. Expenses that are likely to come up quickly may include temporary housing, home inspections, replacement of important documents, and more.
This tip comes directly from a publication by the U.S. Fire Administration. “Begin saving receipts for any money that you spend related to the fire loss. The receipts may be needed later by the insurance company and to prove any losses claimed on your income tax.”
Watch Out for Scams
It’s sad that it needs to be said but beware of counterfeit businesses looking to make a profit off victims of natural disasters. These businesses or individuals may be offering a deal that seems too good to be true. They may require a partial cash payment upfront.
Whether looking for a professional to help with debris clearance or a home remodel, homeowners should always be wary of unlicensed contractors. Many false contractors have required money upfront, begun construction and then dropped off the face of the Earth. Check out our Homeowner Checklist for things you should do before hiring a contractor to ensure you are working with someone you can trust.
Please feel free to contact Randal Winter Construction with any questions about repairing your home. We would be happy to discuss options with you.
